Harrier Pilot Lands On STOOL On Aircraft Carrier After Landing Gear Fails!
Yes you read that right, after the front landing gear failed on one of the US Marine Corps Harrier Jump Jet, aboard the USS Bataan, they decided to substitute this with a um a stool, and guess what, it worked.
The USS Bataan is an (LHD-5) Wasp-class amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy which has been in service since 1997 named after Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines. Behind the stick of the AV-8B Harrier jump jet is Captain William Mahoney. The aircraft has one engine that vector thrust thru four nozzles that provide vertical lift capabilities. Upon deploying the landing gear, he noticed that according to the instruments the front landing gear did not deploy. After making a slow pass by the tower this was visually confirmed and the problem. The solution? A stool that the mechanics of this plane use during maintenance. Watch exemplarily skill as the pilot is guided on the stool by the tower without even being able to see it.
